SKINNER is the art practice of Hamlet Skinner.

The practice produces paintings, sculpture, photography, sound, installations, objects, situations, and occasional evidence of activities that are difficult to categorize.

Its primary areas of research include perception, ritual, memory, beauty, humor, belief, symbolism, altered states, human behavior, and why certain objects suddenly become extremely important once they are placed on a pedestal.

The work frequently begins with something recognizable and subjects it to a controlled amount of interference. Images become artifacts. Objects become ceremonial. Serious things become funny. Funny things become suspiciously serious.

SKINNER maintains that art can function as an object, a signal, a ritual device, a psychological disturbance, a piece of furniture, a financial instrument, or simply something unusually good to look at.

No single interpretation is required.

Some are actively discouraged.
